The Makenke Marine Park, being primarily a marine area, does not have significant terrestrial flora. In the adjacent coastal areas, the Patagonian steppe predominates, with xerophytic vegetation such as neneo, Patagonian molle, calafate, and coirón grasses. Intertidal zones and rocky areas host marine algae, coastal lichens, and plant communities adapted to high salinity and strong winds.
The marine fauna of Makenke is among the most valuable along the Patagonian Atlantic coast. It is home to important colonies of Magellanic penguins, imperial cormorants, and rock cormorants, as well as petrels, skuas, and terns. The area also hosts colonies of South American sea lions, sightings of Commerson’s dolphins (toninas overas), and, occasionally, migrating southern right whales.
The best period for wildlife observation is from November to March, which coincides with the breeding and rearing season of seabirds and marine mammals.
