The Petrified Forest National Park protects a sample of arid Patagonian steppe, dominated by coirón, black forest, neneo and caulk.
In low-lying areas, senecios and Patagonian verbena appear. The current flora contrasts with the ancient Jurassic forests that gave rise to petrified trunks.
Between October and January, wild flowers bloom adapted to arid soils and strong winds.
The fauna is typically steppe, with guanacos, gray foxes, Patagonian foxes, choiques and small birds such as the Patagonian sebum eater and the canastero included.
It is possible to spot blackberry eagles, caranchos and falconcites.
Southern spring and summer are the best times to observe active fauna and migratory birds in transit.
