The nature

Flora

The Chiloé National Park protects one of the most valuable ecosystems in Valdivian temperate forests, characterized by centuries-old trees and great biodiversity.

Species such as larch (Fitzroya cupressoides) stand out, one of the oldest trees on the planet, along with coigües, lenga, tineo, manío and raulí. The undergrowth is very rich and is composed of ferns, mosses, orchids and a wide variety of native plants that provide moisture and vitality to the forest.

In addition, in nearby coastal areas and wetlands, vegetation mixes with grasslands and scrub adapted to the oceanic climate.

Fauna

The fauna of the park is very diverse and stands out for its endemic and protected species. The small and elusive mountain monkey (Dromiciops gliroides), a relict marsupial, is a symbol of Chilean biodiversity. They also inhabit mammals such as the puma, the chilote fox, the red deer and the coypus (a semiaquatic rodent).

The park is home to numerous birds, including the huillín (an endemic otter), the black-necked swan, the chucao, the black carpenter and the kingfisher. In coastal areas you can see seagulls, cormorants and other seabirds. The presence of amphibians and reptiles, some of which are endemic, complements the park's rich fauna.
