The El Cañi Sanctuary protects one of the best-preserved temperate Andean forests in Araucanía.
Its vegetation is dominated by ancient araucarias (Araucaria araucana), many of them more than a thousand years old, which grow accompanied by coihues (Nothofagus dombeyi), lengas and ñirres.
At a lower altitude, ferns, mosses and shrubs such as chilco and notro cover the undergrowth, providing color in spring and summer. In areas close to lagoons such as Laguna Negra or Las Totoras, there are also reeds and aquatic plants adapted to wetlands. In the higher areas, vegetation becomes thinner, with tall grasslands that cover the slopes predominating before reaching the viewpoints and peaks of the sanctuary.
The fauna of the El Cañi Sanctuary is characteristic of the temperate humid forest of southern Chile. Among the most common birds are the black woodpecker, the hued hued and the chucao, which are heard in the thickets.
In the high areas, it is common to see Andean condors, which take advantage of air currents near viewpoints to glide over the valley. Different water birds live in wetlands and lagoons, such as wild ducks, taguas and occasionally black-necked swans.
Although mammals are difficult to observe, the sanctuary is home to species such as pudú (the smallest deer in the world), foxes and winks, all well adapted to the wooded and humid environment.
