The Huilo Huilo Reserve protects one of the richest temperate forests in South America. Century-old trees such as coigües, raulís, lengas, mañíos and myrtle trees, covered with lichens and mosses, stand out.
The undergrowth is populated by ferns, alstroemerias, orchids and the emblematic Copihue. In wetter areas, cinnamon and olive trees grow, while the slopes are home to shrubs such as Chilco and Notro.
The fauna includes unique species such as the little pudú, the guiña, the monito del monte and the puma. Among the birds, the black woodpecker, the chucao and the Andean condor stand out in the heights. It is also home to Darwin's frog, one of the rarest amphibians in the world. Forests and wetlands are shelters for more than 80 species of birds and numerous endemic mammals.
