The steppe dominates the terrestrial landscape of the protected area, characterized by its pastures and shrubs typical of the Patagonian region.
These plant communities form an ecosystem adapted to dry and windy conditions, where resistant species predominate and support an important diversity of fauna.
In the continental zone, the most common animals include guanacos, choiques, foxes, maras and moray calandries, all emblematic species of the Patagonian steppe.
On the other hand, the marine area stands out for its high biodiversity. The complex coastal geography, with numerous islands and the productivity generated by the rise of nutrients from the seabed, creates an ideal environment for many species. Anchovy banks, along with lights and white salmon, are abundant on reefs and open waters. Seabirds such as Magellanic penguins, cormorants, gulls, giant petrels, gulls and white-headed whales find important nesting sites on the coasts and islands.
Marine mammals include one-haired and two-haired sea lions, dark and southern dolphins, overhead toninas, orcas and whales, which use these waters to feed, reproduce and rest.
