Pumalín Park protects one of the best preserved temperate rainforest ecosystems on the planet.
Its vegetation is dominated by dense larch forests (Fitzroya cupressoides), some of which are more than 3,000 years old, together with species such as coigüe de Magallanes, tineo, manío and tepa.
Ferns, mosses, lichens and giant buttocks grow in the undergrowth, creating a humid and green environment all year round. In high altitude areas and volcanic areas, resistant shrubs and plants adapted to stony soils appear.
Pumalín's fauna is very varied and is characteristic of the temperate rainforests of southern Chile.
Among the mammals, the pudú (the smallest deer in the world), the elusive mountain monkey and the cat Güiña, an endangered wild feline, stand out. In the most remote heights and areas, the puma can live.
Species such as the black woodpecker, chucao, rayadito and kingfishers abound among birds. In the lagoons and rivers it is possible to see black-necked swans and herons. In addition, watercourses and wetlands are habitats for native amphibians, such as Darwin's frog, an endemic and threatened species.
