The vegetation of the reserve is mainly composed of species native to the Andean-Patagonian region, most notably ñire (Nothofagus antarctica), maitén (Maytenus boaria), radal (Lomatia hirsuta) and notro (Embothrium coccineum), whose bright red flowers are especially striking in spring.
In the wetter areas, shrubs such as caulk and native herbaceous plants also appear.
The reserve has been the subject of ecological restoration efforts, with the removal of invasive exotic species such as rosehips and the planting of native specimens, favoring the regeneration of the original forest.
The COTESMA Urban Nature Reserve houses a rich diversity of fauna typical of the Andean-Patagonian ecosystem.
Among the most representative species are birds such as the chucao (Scelorchilus rubecula), the rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda), the huet-huet (Pteroptochos tarnii) and the giant woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus), as well as birds of prey such as the common harrier.
It is also possible to observe small mammals such as gray foxes, wild mice, and occasionally hares. The reserve plays a key role as a refuge for urban biodiversity, allowing the sighting and study of species in their natural habitat.
